Tayebwa Hails Kigezi for Peaceful LC Elections, Urges Renewed Fight Against Household Poverty
KABALE — Deputy Speaker of Parliament Thomas Tayebwa has commended the people of Kigezi for supporting National Resistance Movement (NRM) candidates during the recently concluded Local Council elections and urged residents to continue working with government in the fight against household poverty.
Tayebwa made the remarks on Friday while attending a requiem mass at Christ the King Church in Kabale, where he joined mourners to pay his last respects to the late Mary Bazirake, wife of former Southern Division LCIII Chairperson Louis Bazirake. Louis Bazirake also served for 15 years as NRM vice chairperson for Kabale District.
Addressing mourners and local leaders, Tayebwa said the government remains committed to improving the welfare of ordinary families through programmes aimed at reducing poverty in homes.
He noted that Kigezi was fortunate to have several national leaders occupying key government positions, which he said reflected the confidence the country has in the sub-region.
“We should appreciate the NRM government because the Minister of Finance, Planning and Economic Development, Henry Musasizi, is from Kigezi. The Deputy Governor of the Bank of Uganda, Prof. Augustus Nuwagaba, is from Kigezi; the Chief Justice, Dr. Flavian Zeija, is from Kigezi; and I, as Deputy Speaker, am also from Kigezi,” Tayebwa said.
He called on residents to use this opportunity to support government programmes and work hard to improve household incomes.
Kabale District Returning Officer Aisha Nansubuga said the LC elections in the district were conducted peacefully, with only a few areas registering tied results.
“The district generally had peaceful elections except in Kyanamira Sub-county where some candidates tied. The affected elections were repeated and no violence was registered,” Nansubuga said.
She added that the peaceful conduct of the elections demonstrated that citizens were increasingly appreciating the importance of Local Council elections and the power they hold in local governance.
Kabale District NRM Chairperson Bridget Asinga said the party performed strongly in the previous LC elections, winning about 95 percent of the positions, and expressed confidence that the party would perform even better in the forthcoming elections.
“We thank President Yoweri Museveni for his good leadership. People still have hope in him and trust him as their leader,” Asinga said.
The requiem service for the late Mary Bazirake drew political leaders, religious leaders, family members and residents from different parts of Kabale District, with speakers praising her contribution to the community and the support she gave to her husband during his years of public service.
