President Museveni Joins Ruto in Launch of Landmark Kisumu–Malaba Railway Project
President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni today joined William Ruto in Kisumu, Kenya, for the groundbreaking ceremony of the Naivasha–Kisumu–Malaba Standard Gauge Railway (SGR), a major infrastructure project aimed at transforming regional transport across East Africa.
President Museveni attended the event at the invitation of President Ruto, underscoring the strong bilateral ties between Uganda and Kenya and their shared commitment to regional integration.
The new railway line is designed to shift bulk cargo transportation from roads to rail and pipelines, a move expected to significantly improve efficiency, lower transportation costs, and reduce road congestion. The project is also anticipated to boost trade by enhancing connectivity between Kenya’s port city of Mombasa and landlocked neighboring countries, including Uganda.
Leaders at the ceremony emphasized that the railway is a key milestone in advancing economic growth across the region. Once completed, it will play a crucial role in strengthening supply chains, facilitating cross-border commerce, and supporting industrial development.
The Naivasha–Kisumu–Malaba SGR is part of a broader vision to create a seamless regional transport network, reinforcing East Africa’s position as a competitive economic bloc.
