Residents of Kigezi sub-region have expressed excitement following the recognition of Kabale District LCV Chairperson, Nelson Nshangabasheija, as PO 019 within the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU).
‎
‎The announcement was made on Sunday through a post on X (formerly Twitter) by General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, sparking widespread celebration among supporters in Kabale and the wider Kigezi region.
‎
‎Moreen Namanya, the Chairperson of the Patriotic League of Uganda in Kabale, described the recognition as a significant milestone for the people of Kabale and Kigezi at large. She praised Nshangabasheija as a humble and approachable leader whose influence has inspired many to join the PLU.
‎
‎She noted that his commitment to the movement dates back to its early days, at a time when many people were still skeptical about its vision. Namanya also extended gratitude to Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba for what she termed as a “well-deserved recognition.”
‎
‎Another PLU supporter, Asiimwe Collin, said the strength of the organization in Western Uganda is largely attributed to leaders like Nshangabasheija, who remained loyal and committed even before the movement gained widespread attention.
‎
‎Collin further appealed to the Chief of Defence Forces to consider Nshangabasheija for a national role, citing what he described as irregularities in the district electoral process that denied him a fair outcome.
‎
‎Nshangabasheija’s recognition comes within a broader framework of the PLU’s structured system of acknowledging dedicated members. Initially focused on Central Committee members, the recognition system began with Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba as PO 001, followed by notable figures such as Andrew Mwenda (PO 002), Michael Nuwagira, also known as Toyota (PO 003), Edwin Karugire (PO 004), and Daudi Kabanda (PO 005).
‎
‎Other early contributors included Balaam Barugahara, Michael Mawanda, Lillian Aber, the late Cedric Babu, Frank Gashumba, Henry Basaliza, and Fadil Twala, all of whom played key roles in shaping the movement.
‎
‎As the PLU expanded, the recognition system evolved to include more members across different levels. This saw figures like Frank Tumwebaze (PO 013), Kyeyune Kasolo (PO 014), Ruth Aceng (PO 015), Joanne Okia (PO 016), Atim Jackson (PO 017), and Ojara Mapinduzi (PO 018) being acknowledged for their contributions.
‎
‎Within this context, Nshangabasheija’s designation as PO 019 is seen as a reflection of his resilience, loyalty, and continued service to the ideals of the PLU.
‎
‎The recognition list continues with Frank Mwesigye as PO 020, signaling the ongoing commitment of the organization to honor individuals contributing to its growth.
‎
‎Speaking after the announcement, Nshangabasheija expressed gratitude for the recognition, reaffirming his strong support for the Patriotic League of Uganda. He also reiterated his belief in Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba’s leadership, describing him as a visionary leader.
‎
‎For many in Kigezi, the recognition is more than symbolic—it represents pride in local leadership and a shared belief in a growing national movement.
