Robert Kyagulanyi Kicks Off 2026 Presidential Campaign in Busoga, Criticizes Government Response to Landslides
Busoga Region, Uganda — National Unity Platform (NUP) Presidential flag bearer Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, also known as Bobi Wine, launched his 2026 presidential campaign trail on Wednesday morning, beginning with the districts of Manafwa and Namisindwa in the Busoga region.
In his address to community members , Kyagulanyi focused heavily on the issue of landslides, which have devastated several areas in the region. He condemned the government’s handling of the disaster, arguing that while landslides have become a recurring tragedy in the area, the government has failed to adequately compensate the victims. Instead, he claimed that the authorities have only relocated affected people to camps, where they continue to live in squalid conditions.
Kyagulanyi also accused the government of exploiting the tragedy for financial gain, saying that it has used the landslide disaster to attract foreign aid and funding from international bodies, which is then allocated to relief efforts, but not to long-term support or compensation for the victims.
“The government has turned the landslide catastrophe into a money-making venture,” Kyagulanyi told crowds in Manafwa. “Instead of providing sustainable solutions, they bring in foreign donations that barely reach the people who need them most. These are people who have lost their homes and livelihoods, yet they are treated like temporary refugees in their own country.”
The NUP leader stressed that if elected, his administration would prioritize a more effective and compassionate response to disasters, including proper compensation for victims and long-term infrastructural solutions to mitigate the impact of future natural catastrophes. He vowed to invest in disaster preparedness and community support, promising to build resilient systems that could protect vulnerable populations from such recurring calamities.
As Kyagulanyi continues his campaign through the region, it is clear that the issue of landslides will remain a central topic in his bid for the presidency, with promises of a more accountable and responsive government that directly addresses the needs of Ugandans in crisis.
