The Chairperson LCV for Kabale District, Nelson Nshangabasheija, has praised the Chief of Defence Forces (CDF), General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, for his role in fostering unity and enhancing cross-border relations between Uganda and Rwanda.
Nshangabasheija made the remarks on Tuesday while addressing guests at Lukiiko Hall at the Kabale District Headquarters. His comments followed the official reception of a Rwandan military delegation from the Rwanda Defence Force (RDF) at the Katuna border, led by Brig. Gen. Justus Majambere, Commander of RDF’s 5th Infantry Division.
The RDF delegation was received by a team from the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF), headed by Maj. Gen. Paul Muhanguzi, Commander of the UPDF 2nd Infantry Division.
The visit marks a key step in ongoing efforts to improve bilateral military relations, focusing particularly on cross-border security issues. The delegation will spend three days in Uganda, with further discussions scheduled to take place at Cephas Inn Hotel in Kabale.
During his address, Nshangabasheija hailed Gen. Muhoozi as a “unifying figure” and credited him for playing a pivotal role in reopening the Katuna border, which had remained closed for years—bringing trade and business activities to a near standstill in the region.
“General Muhoozi is a reason why the UPDF continues to be one of the most disciplined and respected forces in Africa,” Nshangabasheija said, adding that the country has great hope in his leadership.
He further applauded the UPDF for its professionalism and discipline, describing it as one of the best-trained armies globally.
Speaking to the press, Maj. Kiconco Tabaro, spokesperson for the UPDF 2nd Infantry Division, emphasized that the focus of the bilateral meetings is to tackle cross-border smuggling and related security concerns.
He further said that the porous border had previously been exploited for cattle theft and illicit trade. However, the improving diplomatic and military relations between the two countries are helping to curb these challenges.
“The increasing cooperation between UPDF and RDF is yielding positive results, especially in restoring peace and trust along the border,” Maj. Tabaro said.
The visit by the Rwandan delegation reflects a strengthening of Uganda-Rwanda ties and continued efforts to enhance regional stability and economic collaboration.
