Rukungiri District, Uganda |A Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) response team was ambushed on October 1st by armed assailants on Lake Edward near Rweshama Landing Site in Rukungiri District, prompting a fierce exchange of gunfire that left one soldier dead and several unidentified attackers presumed drowned.

According to Maj. Kiconco Tabaro, Public Information Officer of the UPDF 2nd Infantry Division, the UPDF team was deployed following reports of armed individuals terrorizing local fishermen in the area. Upon arrival, the team came under heavy gunfire from a group of men aboard a canoe.

“The UPDF responded decisively,” said Maj. Tabaro. “In the aftermath, the attackers’ canoe was recovered from the lake. It contained two light machine guns, five sub-machine guns, and a 25-horsepower engine.”

While no assailants were apprehended, authorities believe some may have drowned during the firefight. “We continue to investigate the identities and intentions of the attackers,” Maj. Tabaro added.

Tragically, Staff Sergeant Muhindo Johnson, who commanded the response team, succumbed to injuries sustained in the attack. He is remembered as a dedicated and courageous soldier. The UPDF has extended its condolences to his family and hailed him as a hero who died in the line of duty.

“The UPDF mourns the loss of Staff Sergeant Muhindo and prays that his soul rests in eternal peace,” Maj. Tabaro stated.

Security agencies have since heightened surveillance around Lake Edward and surrounding areas. The UPDF has urged residents of Rweshama and nearby communities to remain calm and to cooperate with security forces as investigations continue.
