The Health Department is pleased to announce a major milestone in maternal and child healthcare within Rukungiri Municipality, as Rukungiri Health Center IV successfully conducted its first Caesarean Section (C-section). Both the mother and the newborn are reported to be in good health.

This achievement marks a significant step forward for the facility which had previously been unable to provide surgical services for expectant mothers requiring operative deliveries. The successful operation demonstrates the government’s continued commitment to improving access to quality healthcare for all Ugandans.

Dr. Maureen Atwikirize, the In-Charge of Rukungiri Health Center IV, expressed her joy and gratitude over the development:

“Today has been one of my happiest and most fulfilling days as a medical professional. This success is the result of months of preparation, dedication, and teamwork. We are thankful to God and to the Government of Uganda for equipping and operationalizing our theatre after a long period without one. This milestone will greatly enhance maternal and child health outcomes within Rukungiri Municipality, the wider district, and beyond.”

Dr. Atwikirize also extended appreciation to the Rukungiri Municipal Council Administration for their unwavering support and to the dedicated medical team at the facility for their passion and professionalism. She further appealed to government and stakeholders to expedite the completion of the new maternity ward which will provide more comfortable and adequate space for mothers.

Dr. Darius Namanya, a Medical Officer at the facility, highlighted the positive impact this development will have on healthcare delivery:

“Previously, patients in need of surgical intervention had to be referred to other hospitals, often at high cost and inconvenience. Having a functional theatre right here at Rukungiri HC IV will improve continuity of care and professional satisfaction among health workers.”

Similarly, Dr. Davis Ahabwe, Principal Medical Officer, commended the Government of Uganda for the continuous financial and infrastructural support extended to Rukungiri HC IV and other health facilities.

“This is a great blessing to our community. It will reduce transport costs, improve access to emergency obstetric care, and ultimately save lives,” he said.

The Anaesthetic Officer confirmed that the theatre is equipped and operational, ensuring that services will continue without interruption.

Midwife Kasande Lovence, who oversaw post-operative care, reported that the mother and baby are stable and recovering well.

“We are closely monitoring vital signs such as blood pressure, heart rate, oxygen levels, and wound healing. The baby is breastfeeding well and both are in good condition,” she noted.

The Government of Uganda remains committed to strengthening healthcare infrastructure, expanding service delivery, and ensuring that every Uganda especially mothers and children has access to safe, affordable, and quality healthcare services.
