Residents Call for Release of Dr Kizza Besigye, Urge MP Niwagaba to Be Their Voice
Residents of Nyabushabi Parish of Kyanamira Sub County, Ndorwa East of Kabale district have appealed for the release of Dr Kizza Besigye, who has been in Ruzira Government Prison for a long time. They asked their Member of Parliament (MP) Wilfred Niwagaba to be their voice in Parliament, saying that people are deeply hurt seeing him remain detained in what they describe as an unclear case.
Speaking during the official launch of Niwagaba campaign trail on Wednesday , Charles Katamujuna at Bugomora Primary School in Nyabushabi Parish said that the MP should speak on their behalf because, as part of their region, it pains them to see one of their own suffering. He noted that Niwagaba has relatives from the area, and the entire community feels the pain. He pleaded with the MP to have mercy and present their concerns in Parliament.
In response, Niwagaba explained that Parliament had already intervened in similar matters, and the Supreme Court declared it unconstitutional to try civilians in military courts. He added that the Minister of Justice was directed to ensure that Kizza Besigye application—pending before the court for a long time—is duly handled, and that since then, the matter has remained a judicial process.
Niwagaba further noted that under Article 128 of the Constitution, the Judiciary is independent, and Parliament has no authority to interfere with judicial proceedings.
He added that, as an advocate, he personally questioned the conduct of the proceedings and the competence of Justice Emmanuel Baguma responsible for the case.
Meanwhile, Twine Protaz a resident of Kitibya in Kyanamira Sub county commended Niwagaba for his great work in promoting education, improving road infrastructure, advocating for better health services, and supporting agriculture, among other achievements.
Niwagaba also pledged to support 400 youths from the four sub-counties of Ndorwa East Constituency under their association by providing motorcycles (boda bodas) to help them improve their livelihoods.
