Over Four Billion Shillings to Fund UPDF Tarehe Sita Projects in Kigezi
Kisoro, Uganda — More than UGX 4 billion will be disbursed to support various community projects across the Kigezi sub-region as part of the Tarehe Sita activities organized by the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF).
The development was confirmed by Major Kiconco Tabaro, the Public Information Officer of the UPDF 2nd Infantry Division, during a preparatory meeting with district leaders and UPDF officers held at Kisoro District Council Hall.
Major Tabaro explained that these community engagements are part of the UPDF’s long-standing commitment to give back to the communities from which its officers originate. He emphasized that through such initiatives, the army strengthens its relationship with the people while celebrating its founding anniversary.
“UPDF officers come from these very communities. Through these activities, we renew our bond with the people and reaffirm our mission to serve and protect Ugandans,” said Major Tabaro.
He revealed that the funds will be distributed across all six districts of Kigezi to support several development projects aimed at improving education, health, and infrastructure.
Following the meeting, UPDF officers conducted assessment visits to project sites, which include the construction of a classroom block at Kaburasazi Primary School, a five-stance pit latrine and classroom block at Bizenga Primary School, another classroom block at Chibumba Primary School, and a bridge in Kanombe, Muramba Subcounty. Additionally, a pit latrine will be built at Busanza Health Centre IV.
Ms. Mukuze Clare, the Headteacher of Kaburasazi Primary School, expressed gratitude to the UPDF for their contribution, saying the projects would greatly improve learning conditions for the pupils.
Residents of Kisoro also welcomed the planned activities, commending the army for its continued service to the community beyond its military duties.
During the same meeting, Kisoro Deputy Resident District Commissioner (RDC) Dan Ndikumwami urged residents to embrace and participate actively in the Tarehe Sita community activities.
“We should all show patriotism by joining hands with the UPDF. It is disheartening to see them working to uplift our communities while some residents remain uninvolved,” Ndikumwami said.
The UPDF is set to roll out a series of activities starting November across the six districts in Kigezi ahead of next year’s Tarehe Sita celebrations, which are expected to be held in the region. These initiatives will include medical camps, renovation of schools, hospitals, and markets, tree planting, and community clean-up exercises.
The Tarehe Sita celebrations mark the founding of the UPDF and serve as an annual reminder of the army’s dedication to peace, unity, and national development.
