Man Strangled to Death in Kanungu District
Kanungu, Uganda – Police in Kanungu District are investigating the mysterious death of a 54-year-old man who is suspected to have been strangled along a village footpath in Butogota Town Council.
The deceased, identified as Eric Ndamiye, a resident of Nyakagyezi Cell in the Eastern Ward of Butogota Town Council, was reportedly a well-known local drinker. According to preliminary police reports, Ndamiye was last seen alive on the evening of October 26, 2025, drinking at a bar belonging to one Niwamanya Gift at Nyakagyezi Trading Centre.
The following morning, October 27, 2025, residents heading to their gardens discovered his lifeless body lying along a footpath leading to his home—just a few metres from the bar where he had been drinking the previous night.
According to ASP Elly Maate, the Kigezi Region Police Spokesperson, the body had visible finger marks around the neck, suggesting that Ndamiye may have been strangled.
“The scene was visited and documented, and a sniffer dog was introduced, but unfortunately, the scene had already been tampered with,” Maate said.
A postmortem examination was conducted at the scene by a medical officer from Mpungu Health Centre IV, and the body was later handed over to the family for burial.
Police have since launched investigations to establish the circumstances surrounding the killing and to apprehend those responsible.
“Inquiries are ongoing, and efforts are being made to arrest the culprits so they can be charged accordingly,” Maate added.
