Kabale Hospital Director Calls for Urgent Infrastructure Improvements at Farewell Ceremony

Sendoff

Dr. Philbert Nyeko the Former Senior Executive Director of Kabale Regional Referral Hospital appealed to the government and local leaders to prioritise the construction of new wards and staff accommodation at Kabale Regional Referral Hospital, noting that some of the existing facilities, built in the early 1930s, are outdated and no longer adequate for patients and staff. Dr. Philbert Nyeko made the remarks during his send-off ceremony on Tuesday at the Intern Doctors’ Hostel, where he retired after four years of service as the hospital’s Senior Executive Consultant and Director.

‎Dr. Nyeko said the lack of space in wards has worsened overcrowding and called for new infrastructure to improve patient care. He also explained the pressing need for more staff housing, underscoring that only a small fraction of the hospital’s workers are accommodated on site, which has contributed to absenteeism and late reporting by staff.

“The wards we are using were constructed in the 1930s, and they can no longer accommodate the increasing number of patients,” Dr. Nyeko said. “We need new infrastructure to improve service delivery and ensure that patients receive care in a conducive environment.”

He emphasised that congestion remains a major challenge at the regional referral facility, which serves thousands of patients from across the Kigezi sub-region and neighbouring areas.

‎During the same ceremony, Dr. Anna Marion Namutebi, who has been serving as a senior consultant at the hospital, was unveiled as the appointed Acting Hospital Director.

‎In her remarks, Dr. Namutebi commended Dr. Nyeko for his leadership and dedication to the institution.

‎“I want to appreciate Dr. Nyeko for his committed leadership and for securing and expanding the hospital land from encroachers,” she said. “His efforts have laid a strong foundation for the continued growth of this hospital.”

‎Dr. Namutebi pledged to build on her predecessor’s achievements and to remain focused on the hospital’s core mandate.

‎“I am taking on this responsibility fully aware of the challenges ahead, but I am committed to upholding the hospital’s mission of helping our patients regain their health,” she added.

‎Kabale Regional Referral Hospital serves six districts in the Kigezi sub-region as well as parts of neighbouring Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
