Joint UPDF–SNA Offensive Secures Key Town in Somalia
4 March, 2026
Troops of the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) serving under the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), in coordination with the Somalia National Army (SNA), have captured the strategic town of Mubarak following a decisive joint military operation targeting an Al-Shabaab stronghold.
The offensive, code-named Operation Rolling Thunder, was launched on February 28, 2026, under the leadership of Sector One Commander Brigadier General Jackson Kayanja. Designed to dismantle insurgent networks and secure critical supply routes, the operation forms part of broader efforts to stabilise southern Somalia and weaken the operational capacity of Al-Shabaab.
For years, Mubarak had served as a key logistical hub for the militants, enabling them to disrupt transport corridors and threaten nearby communities. Its capture is viewed as a significant tactical and symbolic victory for the joint forces.
According to Battle Group 44 Commander and Operation Commander, Colonel Akena, troops encountered resistance but executed the mission with discipline and professionalism. Several militants were killed, others apprehended, and a cache of firearms and ammunition recovered. Forces also dismantled improvised explosive device (IED) manufacturing sites believed to have been used to stage attacks against civilians and security personnel.
“We have secured the town and surrounding areas successfully,” Col Akena said, commending both UPDF and SNA soldiers for their courage and coordination. “This achievement demonstrates our continued resolve to degrade terrorist elements and restore peace.”
Military officials noted that securing Mubarak strengthens ongoing stabilisation initiatives by reopening key routes for humanitarian access and commerce. The victory is expected to facilitate the gradual return of displaced residents and allow local governance structures to resume operations under improved security conditions.
The UPDF reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Somalia’s peace enforcement and stabilisation efforts under AUSSOM, pledging continued collaboration with the SNA and Somali authorities to promote sustainable peace and development.
The capture of Mubarak marks another step forward in the long-running campaign to restore security in Somalia, reinforcing the growing cooperation between regional forces and national institutions in confronting extremism.
