Heavy Rains Destroy Crops, Damage Kabale–Kisoro Road in Kisoro District
Heavy rains over the weekend have destroyed several crop gardens and damaged parts of the Kabale–Kisoro road in Kanaba Sub-county, Kisoro District, disrupting transport and livelihoods.
The most affected area is Kagano Village, where a heavy downpour triggered landslides that swept away crops, animals, and damaged infrastructure. Residents say the rains started at around 4:00 p.m. and lasted for several hours, causing severe destruction.
During a visit to the area, locals were seen clearing debris, collecting damaged crops, and trying to reopen blocked paths after running water washed through gardens and homesteads.
The Chairperson LC1 of Kagano Village, Niyonzima Karaveri, said the landslides destroyed several crop gardens, including onions and beans, and swept away animals. He added that houses, pit latrines, and sections of the Kabale–Kisoro road were also damaged by the landslides.
Niyonzima further noted that poultry and livestock carried away by the floods are still missing, although only five households were directly affected.
One of the affected residents, Habomugisha Elias, said the rains destroyed his onion plantation and bean gardens, and also damaged his house. He warned that without government intervention and relief aid, he risks facing famine.
Another resident, Kwiringira Alexander, said the floods washed away his plantations and carried off four sheep and three pigs, which have not yet been recovered.
Other residents reported that stones and soil from the surrounding hills covered the Kabale–Kisoro road, making movement of vehicles difficult and temporarily cutting off access to the area.
The Kisoro Deputy Resident District Commissioner, Dan Ndikumwami, said authorities are compiling assessment reports which will be forwarded to the Office of the Prime Minister for further action.
