St. Mary’s College Rushoroza in Kabale District continues to strengthen its reputation as one of Uganda’s leading secondary schools under the leadership of headteacher Christopher Monday, with a focus on academic excellence, infrastructure development, discipline, sports and innovation.

Since joining the institution in 2022, Monday has continued to build on the school’s rich history, leading efforts to improve the learning environment and strengthen its standing in the Kigezi region and across Uganda.

With more than 1,200 boarding students, the school has continued to develop its infrastructure and expand its capacity to support teaching, learning and students’ welfare.

Leadership Driving School Development

Before joining St. Mary’s College Rushoroza, Monday served as headteacher of Karujanga Secondary School, where he emphasised discipline, hard work, student enrolment and academic performance.

He brought this experience to Rushoroza with a focus on strengthening academic standards, improving facilities and encouraging learners to pursue excellence both inside and outside the classroom.

The school has developed impressive infrastructure, including multistorey buildings and other facilities that support its growing student population. These developments have enhanced its capacity to accommodate learners and host major educational and sporting events.

In June 2023, St. Mary’s College Rushoroza hosted national ball games, demonstrating its capacity to accommodate competitions involving students from across the country.

Academic Excellence and Innovation

Academic performance remains central to the school’s development. Its reported recent Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE) results included five students scoring 20 points, while the other candidates reportedly qualified for university admission.

The school has also demonstrated its commitment to science and technological innovation.

In 2026, two Senior Four students, Agaba Samuel and Ibzan Johanan Kanyesigye, earned national recognition after developing Deglecy, an artificial intelligence-powered personalised learning platform.

The innovation was ranked second at the National STEM Science Fair held at the SESEMAT Grounds in Kololo, earning St. Mary’s College Rushoroza a Silver Award.

Deglecy is designed to provide personalised learning experiences for primary, secondary and university students using artificial intelligence and locally relevant educational content. The achievement highlights the potential of young Ugandans to develop technological solutions to educational challenges.

A Headteacher With National Education Responsibilities

Beyond his responsibilities at Rushoroza, Monday serves as chairman of the Secondary Science and Mathematics Teachers’ Programme (SESEMAT) and academic chairperson of the Association of Secondary School Headteachers of Uganda (ASSHU).

These roles place him among education professionals involved in promoting science education, strengthening academic standards and encouraging collaboration among school leaders.

His participation in these professional organisations complements his work at the school as it continues to pursue improvements in academic performance, infrastructure and co-curricular activities.

Chief Justice Zeija and Dr. Pius Bigirimana Celebrate Their School

St. Mary’s College Rushoroza also draws inspiration from its distinguished alumni, among them Chief Justice Dr. Flavian Zeija and Dr. Pius Bigirimana, Secretary to the Judiciary.

During a thanksgiving celebration for Chief Justice Zeija, the school celebrated its patron saint and reflected on its contribution to education and national development.

Chief Justice Zeija’s achievements represent an important source of inspiration for current students, demonstrating how education can open doors to leadership and service to the country.

Dr. Bigirimana, another old boy of the institution, has also recognised the school’s contribution to education and its standing within Uganda’s education sector.

The involvement of these distinguished former students highlights the enduring relationship between the institution and its alumni. Their achievements, professional experience and continued association with the school provide encouragement to learners and reinforce the importance of maintaining strong connections between schools and their former students.

The school’s contribution to producing professionals who serve in important national institutions is part of its wider legacy of educating generations of Ugandans.

Kabale District Education Officer Moses Tumwijukye Bwengye has also recognised St. Mary’s College Rushoroza for its performance in academics, co-curricular activities and competitions, describing it as a source of pride for the Kigezi region and the country.

A Legacy Dating Back to 1967

St. Mary’s College Rushoroza was established under the Roman Catholic Church through the Kabale Diocese.

The idea for the school was conceived by the Kigezi Catholic Parents Association on January 15, 1967, and the institution officially opened its doors to its pioneer students on April 4 of the same year.

Initially established as an Ordinary Level institution, the school has developed over the decades into an important centre of secondary education in Kabale District.

Its growth reflects the contribution of successive school administrators, teachers, parents, students and alumni who have worked to advance its mission.

Today, the school continues to build on this history through academic development, investment in infrastructure, participation in national sporting events and encouragement of scientific innovation.

Sustaining the Momentum

As Uganda’s education sector continues to embrace technological advancement, digital learning and skills development, St. Mary’s College Rushoroza faces the task of sustaining its achievements while preparing students for an increasingly competitive world.

The school’s growing boarding population, infrastructure developments, examination results and national recognition for student innovation demonstrate the different areas in which it continues to pursue progress.

Under Christopher Monday’s leadership, the institution is working to strengthen its academic standing while nurturing disciplined, creative and responsible learners.

With the continued involvement of teachers, parents, students and distinguished alumni such as Chief Justice Dr. Flavian Zeija and Dr. Pius Bigirimana, St. Mary’s College Rushoroza remains focused on building upon its legacy.

Its journey is not only a story of school development, but also one of educational ambition, community support and the continuing pursuit of excellence in Uganda.
