23-Year-Old Mother of Triplets Appeals for Help Amidst Crisis in Chahafi Town
A 23-year-old mother from Chahafi Town Council, Nyirazihahwe Meresi, is reaching out to the public and local leaders for urgent assistance after giving birth to premature triplets who are currently fighting for their lives in an incubator. The newborns, all boys, were delivered under fragile conditions and are receiving intensive care at Potter’s Village Children’s Crisis Centre in Kisoro Municipality.
Meresi, a resident of Mpundu Village, shared her heartbreaking story, explaining the immense struggles she is facing both emotionally and financially. “I never imagined this kind of situation for myself,” she said, her voice filled with pain. “I have three beautiful boys, but I have nothing to give them—no money, no food, and no way to provide for them.”
The journey to this crisis began months ago, when the young mother’s life was already under immense pressure. Her crops, which served as her family’s primary source of food and income, were recently destroyed by floods in Kyibumba, leaving them without a means to sustain themselves. “It’s been a tough year,” she explained. “We’ve lost everything—our crops, our livelihood. And now, I am here, struggling to care for my babies, while they fight for their lives.”
While at Potter’s Village, Meresi is dependent on the generosity of fellow caregivers, who sometimes share their food and resources with her. “Sometimes, they give me a bit of what they have, but it’s never enough,” she said. “The situation has become unbearable. I am just trying to stay strong for my children, but I don’t know how much longer I can manage.”
Her husband, Tumwiringire Laban, is equally devastated. A casual laborer by trade, Laban says the destruction of their crops left him without any stable income. “I don’t know where to turn,” he said. “I can’t afford the medical bills, I can’t even feed my wife and children properly. We need help now, more than ever.”
The couple is calling on leaders and well-wishers to extend their hands of support. They have appealed to Kisoro District Woman Member of Parliament, Hon. Akifeza Grace Ngabirano, as well as to Bufumbira East NRM flagbearer Hon. Rolland Kanya Nkurumah, and other community leaders, asking for assistance during this desperate time.
“We are humbly asking for any form of support—whether financial or in-kind—that can help us care for our children and ourselves,” Laban said. “This is a crisis for our family, and without help, we fear for the lives of our babies.”
The family is hopeful that compassionate individuals, organizations, and government leaders will come to their aid during this critical time, and ensure that the young mother and her newborn triplets have a chance to survive and thrive.
For those wishing to offer support, donations can be made directly to the Potter’s Village Children’s Crisis Centre or through local charitable organizations in Kisoro Municipality.
