YUMBE- UGANDA — A tragic road accident that occurred at around 12:40 PM on November 8, 2025, at Kuru Trading Center along the Koboko–Yumbe highway has claimed the life of a nun attached to Lodonga Cathedral Bazirika Catholic Parish.

The accident involved a sky-blue Mazda CX-5, registration number UBP 121F, and a numberless Bajaj Boxer motorcycle. According to police sources at Yumbe Police Station, both vehicles were traveling from Koboko towards Yumbe when the driver of the Mazda, identified as Richard Newton, 35, allegedly drove recklessly and rammed into the motorcycle ahead of him.

The motorcycle was being ridden by Mambo Hillary, 25, a resident of Okpo Cell, Luzira Ward in Lodonga Town Council. The motorcycle was carrying Sister Driciru Lilly, 57, at the time of the accident.

Witnesses who gathered at the scene reported that the impact caused the nun to sustain severe injuries. She was rushed to Kuru Health facility, where medical personnel made efforts to save her life. Unfortunately, she was later pronounced dead.

Police say preliminary findings point to reckless driving as the primary cause of the accident. The Yumbe District Traffic Officer and his team conducted a scene visit and documented evidence for further inquiry. Both the vehicle and motorcycle have since been impounded at Yumbe Police Station pending mechanical inspection.

The driver of the Mazda has been issued with the relevant police forms, including Form 94 and PF 48A & B, as investigations continue. The deceased’s body is currently lying in the Kuru Hospital mortuary awaiting postmortem examination.

In an official statement, SP Asea Collins, North West Nile Region Police Commander, confirmed that the matter is being handled with urgency and thoroughness to ensure justice is served.

The Catholic community in Lodonga, where Sister Lilly served faithfully, has been left in deep sorrow. Arrangements for burial will be communicated by the Church after the postmortem and completion of police procedures.
