Entebbe, Uganda – October 27, 2025:

President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, together with the First Lady and Minister of Education and Sports, Maama Janet Kataaha Museveni, hosted members of the Indian community in Uganda at State House Entebbe to celebrate the Hindu festival of lights, Diwali.

In his remarks, President Museveni congratulated the Indian community in Uganda on the joyous occasion, commending them for their contribution to the country’s economic growth and social development.

“I am glad that when we called them back after Amin’s mistakes, they returned and trusted Uganda again. I thank them for that confidence,” the President said, referring to the expulsion of Asians from Uganda in 1972 and their subsequent return in the 1980s.

President Museveni praised the Indian community for their entrepreneurial spirit, noting that their investments have played a vital role in creating jobs, developing a skilled middle class, and generating revenue for the government to support education and other services.

“Our economy continues to grow because of their entrepreneurial spirit. Through their factories and services, they are helping us create jobs, a skilled middle class, and revenue for government to educate Ugandans,” he said.

On the issue of citizenship and belonging, the President emphasized inclusivity, stating that all Ugandans, regardless of their ancestral origins, are part of one nation.

“On citizenship, it is simple — all these Ugandan groups came from somewhere. What matters is their contribution to building Uganda,” President Museveni affirmed.

He concluded by wishing the Indian community a happy and peaceful Diwali, encouraging continued partnership in advancing Uganda’s development agenda.
