Police in Mbarara City have arrested a 27-year-old man for allegedly attempting to murder a senior police officer by intentionally knocking him with a motorcycle during the presidential campaign trail on Monday.
According to the Rwizi Region Police spokesperson, SP Samson Kasasira, the suspect, identified as Agumaniiwe Richard, a resident of Katojo Cell in Katojo Ward, Mbarara City South Division, was apprehended on December 1, 2025, following the incident that was captured in a viral social media video.
Kasasira said the incident occurred at around 4:00 pm at Kikona–Ruti Town Road junction along the Mbarara–Kabale highway, where police officers were clearing the road ahead of the presidential motorcade. The convoy, led by the President and NRM presidential flag bearer, was moving from Rwampara District to Mbarara City for the final rally of the day.
The suspect, who was riding a Yamaha motorcycle registration number UAC 177Z, reportedly ignored several police signals to leave the road. Instead, he continued at high speed and intentionally knocked SP Ocaya Kennedy, the Officer-in-Charge of Ruti Police Station, who was performing lawful duty.
“SP Ocaya sustained injuries and was immediately rushed to a nearby medical facility for first aid. He is currently in stable condition,” Kasasira confirmed.
He added that upon arrest, the suspect appeared to be intoxicated. “He was subjected to a breathalyzer test to ascertain his level of alcohol consumption as part of the ongoing investigations,” Kasasira noted.
Police have since launched a full inquiry into the incident, which has drawn widespread public attention due to circulating video footage.
