Kabale, Uganda – Kabale District on Wednesday witnessed a major leadership transition after the National Resistance Movement (NRM) district administrative secretary, Amos Rwansheija, officially handed over the party office located along the Kabale–Kisoro Road to the district vice chairperson, Hon. Bridget Asinga Tumwesigye.

The development follows growing divisions within the district party structures after the loss of the Ndorwa West Constituency NRM flag by Hon. David Bahati to Eliab Mporera, a 37-year-old Kampala-based lawyer, during the party primaries.

Hon. Bahati, who currently serves as the State Minister for Trade, Industry, and Cooperatives, and is also the Member of Parliament for Ndorwa West, opted to run as an independent candidate after losing the party flag. He alleged irregularities in the party’s electoral process.

However, Mporera, the new NRM flag bearer for Ndorwa West, dismissed those claims, saying the people had clearly expressed their desire for change.

“For two decades, he has been using money to influence outcomes. This time, the people chose change,” Mporera said. “The constituents have realized it’s time for new leadership that truly represents them.”

During a closed-door meeting attended by party officials, it came as a surprise when the administrative secretary, acting on behalf of the former district chairperson, officially handed over the office keys and stamp to Hon. Asinga, who now assumes full leadership as the Kabale District NRM Chairperson.

Speaking shortly after the handover, Hon. Asinga expressed readiness to take up her new role and pledged to work tirelessly to restore unity and stability within the party.

“I have been entrusted with this great responsibility, and I am ready to carry on the duties of district chairperson,” she said. “Despite the visible divisions within the office, I remain committed to unity and progress. With the full support of our National Chairperson, I believe we will move forward stronger.”

Hon. Asinga emphasized her commitment to reconciliation and teamwork, calling on party members to put aside differences and focus on strengthening the NRM’s presence at the grassroots level.

Meanwhile, Eliab Mporera, the NRM flag bearer for Ndorwa West, welcomed the new leadership and expressed confidence in her ability to steer the party forward.

“It is an honor to have Hon. Asinga as our district chairperson,” Mporera said. “I expect massive support from our members and the public as we work together for the good of the party.”

Recently, during a meeting with religious leaders at Kitanga Parish, Lt. Col. James Mwesigye, the Commissioner in Charge of RDCs and RCCs in Western Uganda, warned politicians against running as independents after losing party primaries. He cautioned that such decisions weaken party cohesion and create opportunities for opposition parties to exploit internal rifts.

“Those claiming they were sent by the President are misleading the public,” Lt. Col. Mwesigye said. “The President supports the official party flag bearers chosen by the people to represent their constituencies.”

With the symbolic handover of the office keys and official stamp, Hon. Bridget Asinga Tumwesigye has officially assumed office as the new Kabale District NRM Chairperson, pledging to unite members, strengthen party structures, and guide the NRM to victory in forthcoming elections.
