Matembe Says She Has Forgiven Museveni and Muhoozi Despite Public Remarks
KAMPALA — Former Ethics and Integrity Minister Dr. Miria Matembe has said she has forgiven President Yoweri Museveni and his son, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, following recent public remarks she described as hurtful.
Speaking after the comments sparked public debate, Matembe said she had chosen forgiveness over bitterness, saying her decision was guided by her Christian faith and personal convictions. She cited the biblical teaching of forgiving those who wrong others, adding that she would not allow anger to define her response.
The former minister said that although she was disappointed by the statements directed at her, she believes forgiveness is a sign of strength rather than weakness. “I forgive them because they do not know what they are doing,” she said, echoing the words attributed to Jesus Christ in the Bible.
The remarks came after President Museveni publicly questioned Matembe’s physical condition during a recent address, while Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba has also been at the center of exchanges involving the veteran politician. The incident has generated mixed reactions from political commentators, civil society groups and members of the public.
Despite extending forgiveness, Matembe maintained that public leaders should exercise restraint and respect when addressing citizens, regardless of political differences. She emphasized that accountability and respectful dialogue remain essential in a democratic society.
Matembe, once a senior figure in the ruling government before becoming one of its outspoken critics, has remained active in national conversations on governance, human rights and constitutionalism. Her latest remarks are expected to add to the ongoing debate over political discourse and leadership in Uganda.
