KABALE — The Vicar General of Kabale Diocese, Msgr. John Vianney Sunday, has urged Catholics to remain firmly rooted in the Catholic Church and resist what he described as the “winds of the world” that can lead believers away from their faith.

‎Msgr. Sunday made the remarks during his homily at St. Francis of Assisi Kyanamira Parish in Kabale District, where Christians gathered on Saturday to celebrate the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary and mark the parish’s first anniversary.

‎He cautioned Catholics against abandoning the Church in search of spiritual guidance elsewhere, particularly from pastors, saying Christians should remain faithful to the teachings of the Catholic Church and deepen their trust in God.

‎Msgr. Sunday said faith is central to a Christian’s relationship with God, noting that Jesus works with people who have strong faith and trust in Him.

‎He expressed concern over Catholics who travel to distant hills and other places to seek prayers from pastors, sometimes returning home having removed or abandoned their rosaries.

‎He urged Catholics instead to strengthen their prayer life and remain committed to their faith, saying God is present everywhere.

‎Msgr. Sunday also encouraged Catholics to maintain devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary, saying Mary listens to those who approach her in prayer and intercedes for them.

‎He questioned the practice of some Christians who undertake pilgrimages frequently without necessarily deepening their personal prayer life.

‎“I hear that there are people who go for pilgrimages every week. Why can’t they pray and trust in God, because He is everywhere?” he said.

‎Reflecting on the Assumption of Mary, Msgr. Sunday urged Christians to learn from Mary’s humility, obedience and unwavering faith in God.

‎He said the celebration should inspire Catholics to emulate Mary by living humble and faithful lives and placing their trust in God.

‎The celebration also marked the first anniversary of St. Francis of Assisi Kyanamira Parish since it was established as a parish.

‎During the anniversary celebrations, funds were collected to support the construction of a grotto dedicated to the Virgin Mary.

‎The parish is under the pastoral stewardship of the Missionaries of Africa, commonly known as the White Fathers.

‎The event was attended by several leaders and guests, including Hon. Bridget Asinga, NRM Chairperson for Kabale District; Dr. Peter Ngategize, former researcher at the Ministry of Finance, Planning and Economic Development; Prime Kemanzi, Kabale District Vice Chairperson; and other local leaders, clergy and Christians.

‎The anniversary celebration brought together Catholics from Kyanamira and surrounding communities to celebrate their faith, reflect on the growth of the parish and renew their commitment to the Catholic Church.
