Kabale University has officially launched the Kabale University Business Incubation Centre (KABBIC), an initiative aimed at strengthening innovation, entrepreneurship, and community transformation across the Kigezi region. The centre, established with support from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Uganda, is expected to play a significant role in enhancing value chains and empowering youth-led enterprises.

Speaking during the launch, UNDP Resident Representative to Uganda, Ms. Vwede-Obahor, emphasized that the incubation centre will serve as a catalyst for creativity and economic empowerment.

“UNDP is proud to partner with Kabale University in establishing a hub that will nurture innovation, stimulate enterprise development, and drive economic growth in the Kigezi region,” she said.

Kabale University’s Vice Chancellor, Prof. Joy Constance Kwesiga, hailed the project as a major milestone in the institution’s commitment to research-driven community development. She noted that KABBIC will help bridge the gap between academic knowledge and practical, market-ready solutions.

“This centre represents our dedication to fostering innovation and empowering our communities through research, skill-building, and hands-on entrepreneurship,” Prof. Kwesiga stated.

The Vice Chancellor also highlighted the university’s recent academic triumphs, revealing that the Department of Medicine won both the Africa Medical School Championship and the African Continent Quiz. These achievements, she said, reinforce Kabale University’s rising profile in higher education.

Meanwhile, Muzamil Mukwatempora, the Commissioner for Higher Education at the Ministry of Education and Sports, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to promoting practical, skills-based learning in universities and tertiary institutions.

“The government continues to support initiatives that enhance innovation and equip learners with relevant, employable skills,” he said, commending Kabale University and UNDP for their partnership.

With the new Business Incubation Centre now operational, Kabale University is poised to become a key driver of youth innovation, enterprise development, and economic transformation in Kigezi and beyond.
