Police in Lira District are investigating a tragic domestic incident in which a 39-year-old woman was allegedly stabbed to death by her husband following a dispute over a smartphone.

The deceased, Evelyn Atoo, a resident of Alit Village in Adola Parish, Awiodyek Sub-county, was reportedly attacked on the evening of February 26, 2026, at around 6:30pm. According to police reports, the fight broke out when her husband, Bonny Olungu, attempted to smash her phone during a domestic quarrel.

Authorities say the disagreement stemmed from Olungu’s suspicion that the smartphone had been bought for Atoo by another man, even though she had reportedly acquired it through a loan arrangement.

During the scuffle, Atoo was stabbed with a knife and sustained severe bleeding. Olungu later rushed her to Emmanuel Medical Clinic at Corner Amac Trading Centre, but her condition was critical. She was pronounced dead at about 9:00pm after efforts by medical staff to save her life failed.

A medical worker who attended to the victim said she had lost a significant amount of blood by the time she arrived at the facility.

North Kyoga Regional Police spokesperson Patrick Jimmy Okema confirmed that a homicide investigation is underway. Police officers, together with Scenes of Crime personnel, visited and documented the scene. Witness statements have been recorded, and the suspected murder weapon—a knife—has been recovered as evidence.

The body of the deceased was taken to mortuary for a postmortem examination.

Police said the suspect fled after the incident and is currently on the run. Security agencies have launched intelligence-led operations to track him down and bring him to justice.

Authorities have also urged couples to seek peaceful ways of resolving domestic conflicts, warning that violence often leads to irreversible tragedy.
