A somber mood has engulfed Kahengye Parents Secondary School and Nyamunuka Town Council in Ntungamo District following a tragic motorcycle accident that claimed two lives and left four others critically injured on Wednesday night.

The fatal crash occurred at Iterero trading center, near Fountain Junior Primary School, along the Rukungiri–Ntungamo highway, when two motorcycles collided head-on as riders reportedly attempted to dodge deep potholes along the dilapidated section of the road.

According to preliminary reports, four students from Kahengye Parents Secondary School allegedly sneaked out of school after evening preps around 10:10 p.m. and hired a motorcycle, registration number RN UMA 702BP, to Nyamunuka Town. On their return, the motorcycle collided with another, RN UGD 386R, ridden by Nuwashaba Reagan, who was carrying a 16-year-old passenger, Gumoshabe Victorian, from Kakibaya in Southern Division, Kebisoni Town Council.

Both riders  Amupire Odurike, a Senior Five student and Head Prefect of Kahengye Parents Secondary School, and Nuwashaba Reagan, a resident of Nyamunuka died instantly at the scene. The accident left four others, including students Tudyaguma Genious (School Council Chairperson), Musiimenta Elias, Akadwanaho Nelson, and Gumoshabe Victorian, with severe injuries.

The injured were initially rushed to nearby health facilities before two of them, Tudyaguma and Victorian, were referred to Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital for specialized treatment due to their worsening condition.

Police from Rwashamaire Police Station later visited the scene, retrieved the bodies, and transferred them to Rwashamaire Health Centre IV mortuary for postmortem examinations. The two motorcycles involved are currently impounded at the station as investigations continue.

Local leaders, led by Yassin Katafa Byamukama, the Speaker of Nyamunuka Town Council, expressed concern over the poor state of the Rukungiri–Ntungamo road, attributing the frequent loss of lives to its deplorable condition marked by deep potholes and poor visibility at night. He appealed to the Ministry of Works and Transport to urgently rehabilitate the road to prevent further tragedies.

Police have since launched investigations to determine the exact cause of the crash and to establish how the students managed to leave the school premises at night without the knowledge of the administration.

The accident adds to the growing number of fatalities along the Rukungiri–Ntungamo road, raising fresh concerns about road safety and enforcement in the region.
